A Montreal artist and lecturer
Amos Latteier, a Montreal artist and lecturer, had to get Kaskey’s permission to use the likeness of the statue for his Be Portlandia project in 2003. That project, which Latteier had to assure Kaskey he would not profit from, involved the creation of an art installation reminiscent of Portlandia’s perch on the Portland Building and photographing people posing on it with a trident.
“In general, I have an unfavorable view of copyright law,” Latteier tells WW. “It doesn’t benefit most artists or the process of cultural creation.
“Likewise, I am generally opposed to rent-seeking behavior.”
“Copyright has its origins in censorship and thought control,” says Stephan Kinsella, a Houston intellectual property lawyer and author of Against Intellectual Property. Kinsella cites odd outcomes such as the city of Paris’ 2003 move to copyright the night view of its signature structure. “You could be sued by the city of Paris for using a photo of the Eiffel Tower taken at night—and only at night—without its consent,” he says. Similar things have happened to other public art. Last year, a federal court awarded sculptor Frank Gaylord of Vermont nearly $700,000 in damages after determining the U.S. Postal Service did not have permission to use a photograph of Gaylord’s 1995 work “The Column,” a group of sculptures of U.S. soldiers and sailors that is part of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., on a commemorative stamp.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino would like to eliminate the influence
Louisville coach Rick Pitino would like to eliminate the influence of athletic shoe companies in the recruiting process.
Pitino ended a news conference Thursday railing against a system he believes is often driven by shoe companies such as Nike and even adidas sponsoring AAU programs.
The 62-year-old Pitino believes the relationship between shoe companies and AAU programs has become problematic in recent years. ''What I personally don't like (is) I can't recruit a kid because he wears Nike on the AAU circuit,'' Pitino said. ''I had never heard of such a thing and it's happening in our world. Or, he's on the adidas circuit, so the Nike schools don't want him.'' The coach added that it is a very tough situation to address ''because our pockets are lined with their money.''

An M4 Sherman like the one featured in the film
An M4 Sherman like the one featured in the film could penetrate the upper frontal hull of a Tiger 1 from between about 1,600 and 3,300 feet (500 meters and 1000 m), while the Tiger could knock out an M4 from the front at about 2,600 feet (800 m), according to a Tiger crew instruction manual.
Both tanks used in the film — the Sherman M4E8 and the Tiger 131 — are real, and belong to the Tank Museum in Bovington, England.
The Tiger 131 was built in Kassel, Germany, in February 1943 and was shipped to Tunisia to join the 504th German heavy tank battalion, according to the Tank Museum's website.
On April 21, 1943, the Tiger was taken out of action by a Churchill tank of the British 48th Royal Tank Regiment, and was captured and repaired. On Sept. 25, 1951, the Tiger was given to the Tank Museum. The Tiger was "one of [the] most feared weapons unleashed by the Nazis," capable of destroying an enemy tank from more than 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) away, Richard Smith, the Tank Museum's director, told the BBC. Yet despite its ferocity, the Tiger wasn't invincible. Its tracks would freeze up with mud and snow in the winter, which Russian forces used to their advantage in battle.
The tanks engines' were underpowered, making them difficult to drive. The tanks also faced problems because of their large size. Since few bridges could handle the Tiger's weight, the first version contained a snorkel that allowed the tanks to cross rivers up to 13 feet (4 m) deep, but later versions lacked this feature, according to the History Learning Site.

That helps explains why oil has floated around $100 per barrel since 2011
That helps explains why oil has floated around $100 per barrel since 2011, despite the US boom. "The best explanation for that is that it's been a coincidence," said Michael Levi, an energy expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, in a recent interview. "We've had surprising US gains in production that have been offset by surprising losses elsewhere, due to geopolitical disruptions."
But over the past month, those disruptions have started easing a bit. Libya's oil industry has started pumping out oil again — with exports unexpectedly rising 810,000 barrels per day in September.
It's also becoming clear that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) likely won't threaten Iraq's biggest oil fields in the southern part of the country. And, at the same time, oil demand in Asia in Europe has started to weaken. So now oil prices are falling, from their June peak of around $115 per barrel down to around $92 per barrel at the start of October. Mind you, oil is still much, much pricier than it was a decade ago. And it's entirely possible that the recent drop could prove only temporary (after all, we saw price dips in 2012 and 2013, but new conflicts flared up in the Middle East and prices soon popped back up). But assuming the current drop is real — and sustained — it could have a very large impact around the world.

n old undated news article found among his wife's possessions
An old undated news article found among his wife's possessions says Maxine Carr worked for 32 months on the International Military Tribunal staff in Nuremberg.
In November 1945, the landmark Nuremberg trials began. Twelve of the 23 defendants, including Hitler aide Hermann Goering, were sentenced to death.
Almost seven decades after the war, many institutions, including the Harvard Law School Library, have extensive collections of Nuremberg trial documentation, said Ed Moloy, curator of modern manuscripts at the Harvard library. While the Carr collection is interesting, it's likely not particularly unique, he said.
But it might appeal to a private collector who wants such documents that are not already housed in a repository such as the Harvard library, which has 600 linear feet of Nuremberg documents. "It's very possible that people like Miss Carr, who was part of this pool of civilians working to support the trials, ended up with extra copies or something and saved them for souvenirs," Moloy said. "That's what I would assume this collection is."

We’re naturally drawn to colorful things
We’re naturally drawn to colorful things. Shiny cars, vivid sunsets, the Pantone color of the year (cheers to Radiant Orchid for 2014). Nutrition pros recommend extending that shade appreciation to your diet as well, because one of the keys to a healthy plate is color.
“When you eat for color, it’s an easy way to monitor the phytonutrients—the flavonoids and polyphenols—you’re getting in various vegetables. These potent antioxidants support your cells’ machinery, so that they stay fluid and optimally functioning,” says Terry Wahls, M.D., founder of the Wahls Foundation.
“In the absence of vibrant colors in the diet, you have more inflammation and the cell structures can become stiff and damaged.” The foods that do the most damage to our cells and long-term health—sugar, flour, and processed carbohydrates—are devoid of vivid color (artificial food coloring notwithstanding). In this regard, vibrant equals alive and the way Wahls translates it is compelling. “I think of it like this—health is fluidity whereas stiffness and rigidity is aging and disease,” she says. But what does it mean to eat with the color spectrum in mind? Wahls’ advice is to consume this breakdown: 3 cups cooked or raw greens, 3 cups of sulfur-rich veggies (cruciferous types like broccoli and cabbage), and 3 cups of vibrant-and-varied veggies (think orange, red, yellow).
“I’m a big believer in variety, so if you can, try to hit all the colors each day.” If that sounds like a tall order, start by decorating your plate with the most vivid hues in the produce aisle. It’s easier than you think to blend several colors into sautés and salads, or to make a colorful slaw by mixing purple and green cabbage plus carrots. This will help you steer clear of common deficiencies as you benefit your cells and boost eye, prostate, and vascular health.

In Hawaii's popular Waikiki neighborhood
In Hawaii's popular Waikiki neighborhood — a renowned destination for surfing and mai tais — people were lying down near the entrance to Macy's, human waste was on the sidewalk, and parents had to explain to their children why people were begging for money.
It's not exactly the paradise tourists envisioned when they saved up for their vacations.
Those were the complaints of tourism industry officials who pushed for a ban on sitting and lying down on sidewalks in Hawaii's most popular tourist destination.
"There's an expectation for Waikiki, for Hawaii. It's a dream," said Helene "Sam" Shenkus, marketing director of the Royal Hawaiian Center. "And because they're families and it's their money, they don't have to come here."
The Honolulu City Council approved several measures Wednesday aimed at moving homeless people out of tourist hotspots in Hawaii, including one that bans sitting and lying down on sidewalks in the Waikiki area. But a separate proposal to prevent homeless people from resting on sidewalks throughout the island failed. City officials are planning to set up a temporary encampment on a remote, mostly industrial island far from resorts. Some of Oahu's estimated 4,700 homeless people would be allowed to camp on Sand Island, which was used during World War II as an internment camp for Japanese-Americans and is home to a wastewater treatment plant and former dump. The city has been under pressure from the tourism industry to act, with hotel representatives saying visitors complain often about safety and human waste.
The council responded, in part, by passing a measure that prohibits people using sidewalks as open-air restrooms on the island of Oahu. Alan Naito, general manager of Ohana Waikiki East Hotel, said he regularly sends his employees to clean up the waste in a nearby park where he recently saw someone preparing to go near a coconut tree in broad daylight.

Another important bedroom furniture that most young men need to have in their bachelor pad or apartment
Another important bedroom furniture that most young men need to have in their bachelor pad or apartment, is the wardrobe closet or armoires to supplement the built-in closet space in the room. Men invest a great deal of their time and money in keeping their good appearance through their wardrobe. Hence, they should have enough space to put in their suits, trousers and jeans including storage space for foldable clothes. While these may seem not important to some men, for those who are meticulous with their clothes, an organized storage of clothes in wardrobe closets and storage drawers is very important.
The bachelor bedroom can also have nightstands as a convenient place to put their knick-knacks like alarm clock, keys, glasses, phones, loose change and other gadgets. There are many modern designs that will suit the character of the bachelor. Folding tray table or accent console table with drawers are some of the more modern forms of nightstands. And while nightstands may not be a necessary bedroom furniture in a bachelor pad, they can be a beautiful addition to the room.
A bachelor pad should have the right furniture and complementing decorative and accent pieces to complete the desired design statement and character. Where curtains can be replaced with neutral blinds, art dor pieces like a sculpture or an artwork highlighting the living room or bedroom may replace jars and other feminine accents usually seen in many homes. Most importantly, it should offer comfort and homey ambiance that will make men come home every night seeking its serene and quiet solitude.

Keatts explained to Cobb just how he ended up at that table
